Self-Ligating Braces at Knoxville Orthodontics

Self-Ligating Braces at Knoxville Orthodontics

At Knoxville Orthodontics, we offer self-ligating braces as an alternative to traditional braces that use elastic bands or metal ties to hold the archwire in place. Instead, self-ligating braces use a particular clip or door mechanism to secure the wire, reducing the pressure and friction applied to the teeth during treatment as the teeth gradually move into position.

The Self-Ligating Braces Procedures

Knoxville Orthodontics

The procedure for self-ligating braces begins with an initial consultation. During this consultation, our orthodontist will examine your teeth and jaw, take X-rays and impressions of your teeth, and assess your oral health. If, after going over your treatment options, you and the orthodontist decide self-ligating braces are the best choice, our orthodontist will proceed with placing the braces.

Our orthodontist will start by cleaning your teeth and then applying a bonding agent to each tooth to help the brackets adhere to your teeth. The brackets are then placed on your teeth, and a special curing light is used to harden the bonding agent. Once the brackets are in place, our orthodontist will insert the archwire and secure it with the self-ligating clip or door mechanism.

Throughout the treatment, you will visit our orthodontist every four to six weeks for adjustments. During these appointments, our orthodontist will adjust the archwire, clip, or door mechanism to ensure your teeth move as planned. Our orthodontist will remove the brackets and wires once your treatment is complete. A retainer will be provided to help maintain your newly straightened teeth.

The Benefits of Self-Ligating Braces

Knoxville Orthodontics

Self-ligating braces are orthodontic appliances that do not use elastics or metal wires to hold the archwire in place. Instead, the brackets of the braces are connected by tiny doors or “locks” activated by the pressure of your bite. These small locks hold the archwire in its proper place without elastic bands. This eliminates the need for frequent tightening appointments throughout your orthodontic treatment.

Instead of rubber bands, self-ligating braces use ligatures. The ligatures are tiny clips that keep the wire attached to the bracket. They are made from stainless steel and will remain locked throughout your treatment. As your teeth move during your orthodontic treatment, our orthodontist will periodically tighten the wire to continue to guide your teeth into place. This convenient solution allows for better overall results, shorter appointment times, and more comfort.

Another advantage of this system is that your oral hygiene routine will require fewer steps because there are no ties to be cleaned. When brushing your teeth, brush each bracket with a toothbrush and toothpaste to remove any plaque buildup and debris that can cause tooth decay. It's important to follow our orthodontist's instructions on caring for your self-ligating braces and maintaining good oral hygiene during your treatment to ensure the best results.
